- Meet Lorelai, a spirited 7-month-old tortoiseshell with a heart full of courage and a love for play! This brave little lady came to the shelter after being transferred from another organization, injured and understandably scared. She had a swollen back left leg with necrotic tissue, but despite her discomfort, Lorelai never lost her gentle spirit. She allowed the veterinary team to treat her with kindness and patience, showing her resilient nature from the start.
Thanks to swift medical attention, Lorelai's injury was cleaned, treated, and ultimately required surgery to fully heal. After weeks of dedicated care and observation, she's now ready to find a forever home!
Lorelai's playful side shines through as she zips around the room, chasing toys and pouncing on anything that moves. Her injury no longer bothers her, and she's as active and energetic as any kitten her age. She's outgoing and curious, always looking for the next adventure, and her sweet, affectionate personality is just waiting to be shared with a loving family.

We don’t offer holds on shelter pets, so c’mon in to meet and greet to decide if you’ve met your match. Applications for pets in foster care, at Ojo Santa Fe, or offsite in other programs will be reviewed by staff before appointments are scheduled.

For over three decades, we have managed an open-door shelter that welcomes every animal without charge because we believe the most humane approach is to never turn away an animal in need. Spay/neuter access is critical to our mission, and our clinic is completely free to pets in Española, Rio Arriba County, and the surrounding Pueblos.

Join our team of volunteers
Volunteers help every facet of our work, from support at the shelter to helping with adoption events to assistance with animal transport. We provide the training and the welcoming environment. Meet new people, learn new skills, and feel good about helping animals.
Need help finding your pet?
80% of pets are found within a mile of where they went missing. Start searching right away and use printed flyers so people can call you with sightings. An ID tag or microchip will make it a lot easier to find your pet. Hopefully, they’ve already been found and are at our shelter.
